Dear Chairman and Commissioners,
My name is Mason White, and I'm just a regular guy from Missouri who wants to share my thoughts on the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on Prediction Markets, as published in 91 FR 12516. I'm not a lawyer or a financial expert, just someone who has been actively trading on platforms like Kalshi for a while now. I believe these markets are valuable, and I hope the CFTC will regulate them in a way that lets everyday people like me keep participating.
I've found prediction markets to be incredibly useful. Honestly, the forecasts they produce are often way more accurate than what I see from polls or TV pundits. I remember last year, during the midterms, I was looking at Kalshi's election contracts, and the prices gave a clearer picture of what was likely to happen than anything I heard on the news. That kind of information isn't just helpful for traders like me, it's something everyone can benefit from, whether they trade or not. Its like a real-time snapshot of what people actually think, based on where theyre willing to put their money.
What worries me is the idea of banning or over-restricting these markets. I value my freedom to participate in legal, regulated platforms. If the CFTC makes it too hard to trade on places like Kalshi, Im afraid people will just turn to offshore sites that arent regulated at all. Id much rather have the CFTC overseeing things here in the US, keeping markets safe and fair, than push activity to some sketchy platform overseas where theres no accountability. Plus, I think the US should be leading the way in financial innovation. We shouldnt let other countries take the lead because were too cautious.
I noticed some of the questions in the ANPR, like Question 7 about balancing innovation and consumer protection, and Question 13 about the public interest. My take is that prediction markets are a form of innovation that benefits the public by providing better information. Protecting consumers is important, but that can be done with smart rules, not outright bans. And on Question 29 about inside information, I think the CFTC already has tools to handle bad actors. Dont punish everyone by shutting down these markets.
Im asking you to support proportionate regulation of prediction markets. Keep them legal and accessible on regulated platforms, and focus on enforcing the rules you already have against manipulation or insider trading. Let regular folks like me continue to participate in a system thats fair and transparent.
Thank you for considering my input.
Sincerely,
Mason White
