I am a user of prediction markets by trading on different markets and using them as a great information source. In today's world, where there is so much fake/biased news, it is extremely important to have these markets. In this comment, I'd like to talk mostly about sports markets and the information these markets provide because I think that's the biggest use for the majority of Americans. The information (odds of Team A beating Team B) that these markets provide is extremely useful. In sports there is a lot of fake/biased news that can only be dispelled with these markets. Before I watch a game, I almost always know or want to know what the odds are. Without these markets, I have two options to get this information, which are both not ideal. The first option is analytics like ESPN analytics, which is usually very close to what the market has but is not perfect. Sometimes it could differ drastically because the analytics just don't cover everything. An example of this was when the Celtics played the Warriors in the finals in 2022. ESPN analytics had the Celtics winning the finals at a very high percentage compared to betting markets. Many people were not happy with this huge discrepancy, as they saw the finals as a very close matchup, as the Celtics were younger and the Warriors had Steph Curry. Having both the market odds along with ESPN analytics is very useful for sports fans. The second option I'd use without these markets is sportsbooks' odds. Sportsbooks and prediction markets are very similar in the way they provide information about the odds of a game. They both, in their purest sense, rely on the idea that the wisdom of the crowds with money on the line provides the best odds. There are legal sportsbooks in many states that provide this value, but as of now this is done in a very inefficient and unfair way. The biggest sportsbooks in America limit winners who provide the information, which then causes the winners to bet through other people or go offshore. This way of getting the very useful information that many Americans want should not be normalized. Prediction markets specifically on sports should be allowed in America.
