In the current regulatory environment, there is nothing stopping people from placing bets on events for which they have privileged information, if not direct influence. That this is happening has already become so obvious that the White House issued a public statement warning staff against placing bets based on inside knowledge, and pundits are speculating that hostile entities will use spikes in certain foreign policy bets to predict action against them by the United States. At a certain point, it becomes a national security risk.
There must be greater transparency and more effective guardrails to prevent those with their fingers on the button from getting rich and endangering lives by betting on whether they will push it.
