"Prediction markets", while framed as tools for forecasting, function in practice as barely regulated speculative gambling platforms that can distort public discourse and incentivize the spread of sensationalist or harmful narratives to influence market outcomes. When financial gain is tied to real-world events such as elections, public health crises, or acts of violence, these markets create perverse incentives that can undermine democratic institutions and erode public trust. Like other forms of gambling, they disproportionately attract and harm vulnerable individuals susceptible to addictive behavior, while the platforms themselves profit regardless of outcome.
It is therefore my opinion that "prediction markets" should be legally classified as gambling, and receive to the same legal scrutiny as casinos and more traditional "sports betting".
